Alimentação de Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier) (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Vendel,Ana Lúcia; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha.
Seasonal variation of food items of Bairdiella ronchus (Cuvier, 1830) classified by size was analysed based on monthly samples between september/1993 and september/1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazil. The stomach contents of a hundred eighty-two fishes were analysed by the Occunence Frequency Method and Point Count for a Lot Method. The individuais were divided in two groups, smaller and longer than 140mm, and a comparative study of digestive tract and branchial are was performed for these groups. For fishes smaller than 140mm the following sequence of items was obtained matching both methods by using the Preponderance índices: decapods (subdivided in Brachyura, Caridea and Penaeidea), polychaets, isopods, fishes, unidentified material, copepods,...

Aspectos da alimentação de Genidens genidens (Valenciennes) (Siluriformes, Ariidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendei,Ana Lúcia.
Seasonal variation of the food items of the "bagre-urutu", Genidens genidens is analysed based on monthly samples between September, 1993 and April, 1995 at the Guaratuba Bay, coast of Paraná. The stomach contents of 105 fish is analysed by the Occurrence Frequency Method and 41 of these have also been analysed by the Volumetric Method. Matching both methods using the Preponderance índices, a larger incidence of decapods is determined, followed by other crustaceans, molluscs, polychaets, fish, and plant material. The data show the existence of a strong seasonal variation in the diet.

Characterization of the occupied shells by the hermit crab Clibanarius vittatus (Decapoda, Diogenidae) at Baixio Mirim tideflat, Guaratuba Bay, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Sampaio,Sara R.; Masunari,Setuko.
A characterization of the occupied shells by the hermit crab Clibanarius vittatus was carried out. Hermit crabs were collected in the intertidal zone, during the low spring tide monthly from April 2005 to March 2006. They were sexed and their cephalothoracic shield length (CL) was measured. Shells were identified, dried, weighed and the aperture length (AL) and width (AW) were measured. 1187 crabs were collected (949 males, 216 females and 22 intersexes), which occupied 12 species of gastropod shells. Stramonita haemastoma, Olivancillaria urceus and Dorsanum moniliferum made up 96.55% of the total shell species. Male hermit crabs attained significantly larger sizes than females; therefore, males occupied a wider spectrum of shells in size and weight. A...

Composição ictiofaunística da área de manguezal da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Corrêa,Marco Fábio Maia.
The Guaratuba Bay (25o52'S, 48o39'W) is the second largest estuarine system of the State of Parana, Brazil. It extended inside of the continent for about 15 km and is surrounded by mangroves. Water depth can reach up to six meters. The fish faunal composition of this area was evaluated with a bottom trawl and, occasionally, casting and gill nets. One species of Chondrichthyes and 59 of the Actinopterygii (50 genera and 28 families) were reported from the Bay. The results were not significantly different from those of the Paranagua Bay, except by the lower number of species. These differences appear related to distinct collection efforts and the extension of surveyed areas. No species can be considered endemic to the region. Tipically freshwater species...

Description of the first juvenile stage of the fiddler crab Minuca mordax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ocypodidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Martins,Salise Brandt; Marochi,Murilo Zanetti; Masunari,Setuko.
ABSTRACT The first stage of the fiddler crab Minuca mordax is described here. Zoea larvae obtained from four ovigerous female were reared in the laboratory until the development of the first crab stage. The development from zoea I to the first juvenile instar lasted 35 days after hatching. The first crab stage of Minuca mordax can be morphologically distinguished from those of Minuca burgersi and Leptuca cumulanta by a 2-segmented antennule endopod (3-segmented in M. burgersi, unsegmented in L. cumulanta), an unsegmented maxillule endopod (2-segmented in M. burgersi and L. cumulanta), and a 4-segmented first and second maxilliped endopod (respectively unsegmented and 5-segmented in M. burgersi and L. cumulanta). The three species have the following...

Escherichia coli in the surface waters and in oysters of two cultivations of Guaratuba Bay - Paraná - Brazil BABT
Forcelini,Helenita Catharina Dalla-Lana; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth; Absher,Theresinha Monteiro.
The present work aimed to evaluate the contamination of Escherichia coli in the surface waters and oysters from two cultivations of Guaratuba Bay and to analyze the correlation patterns among the concentrations of E. coli in the waters and in the oysters with the local physical-chemical parameters. Samples were collected in the spring of 2007 and summer, autumn and winter of 2008 from two points of the bay (internal point and external point). From each cultivation and sampling period, 18 oysters were collected. The samples of surface water were collected for the measurement of physical-chemical parameters (pH, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, seston, particulate organic matter) and quantification of E. coli. The surface water analyzed in the summer...

Estrutura populacional de Pomadasys corvinaeformis (Steindachner) (Teleostei, Haemulidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha.
Reproductive and biometrical analyses were pertormed on 1629 individuals of P. corvinaeformis collected monthly from October 1993 to September 1996, at Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. The results indicate that the species is more abundant in the mangrove area during winter, when the largest individuais were collected, and spring, when the water temperature is lower and the salinity higher than summer or autumn. The relationship of body weight to body length, for grouped sexes, is "lnTW= -12,0456 + 3,1831 lnTL". The monthly Condition Factor is highest during summer and lowest during winter. It is suggested that P. corvinaeformis is present in the mangrove area during a specific etape of its life cycle and does not use this area to maturation and...

Indicadores reprodutivos das espécies de Citharichthys Bleeker (Teleostei, Pleuronectiformes) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso C; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The species of Citharichthys Bleeker, 1862, C. arenaceus Evermann & Marsh, 1900 and C. spilopterus Günther, 1862, are the most common flatfishes found in Guaratuba Bay, south Brazil. Different size categories of these flatfish occur in the mangrove area throughout the year. The Gonadosomatic Index, the Condition Factor, and the morphological analyses of the gonads from samples obtained between 1994 and 1996 reveals a spawning activity during late Spring and early Summer. This period coincides with the increase in temperature and decrease in salinity. Spawning evidence and the presence of ali size categories throughout the year indicate that Citharichthys spp. are permanent inhabitants of the mangrove in Guaratuba Bay, where they complete their life...

Nota complementar sobre a composição ictiofaunística da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo T. C.; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The utilisation of multiple gears and the surveying of other areas than that of mangrove habitats have increased in 27 the number of fish species known in the Guaratuba Bay, an estuarine ecosystem located in the southern of Brazilian coastal region (25º52'S, 48º39'W). The new occurrence of a typically freshwater species (Pimelodidae) and of several Clupeiformes and Gobiidae species, reveals the importance of the salt marsh and the innermost zones of this Bay to the distribution of certain fish groups.

Reprodução de Stellifer rastrifer (Jordan) (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) na Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo de Tarso da Cunha; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
A total of 1312 individuais of S. rastrifer were sampled from March 1994 to September 1996 at the Guaratuba Bay, Southern Brazilian coast. This species is a permanently inhabitant of the mangrove area throughout the year. The weight/length relationship of the species in the region is "In TW =-12,35 + 3,22 In TL", and the individuais may reach 172mm of total length. The analyses of gonadal morphology and gonadossomatic index indicate that S. rastrifer is a multiple spawner species, that reproduces at the mangrove area during a long period of the year. The reproductive activity is more intense during the winter and mainly the spring, when the value of Condition Factor declines and empty folheies are found in the ovaries.
